Smoove & Turrell are a highly regarded English soul band hailing from Gateshead in the North East of England, celebrated for their unique signature sound they proudly label „Northern Funk“.

The  band’s story began in the post-millennium era, built around the core duo of DJ/producer Jonathan „Smoove“ Watson and singer/songwriter John Turrell. What started as a shared passion for soul, funk, and hip-hop samples among working-class lads quickly evolved into a dynamic full live band. 

Their style is a contemporary fusion of funk, soul, Northern soul, hip-hop, and electronic music, blending vintage grooves with a modern edge. Turrell’s soulful, gritty vocals often deliver socially conscious lyrics that reflect working-class life in the North East, balanced with irresistible, dancefloor-friendly euphoria.

The band found an early and strong champion in BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Craig Charles, whose support helped launch them into the national spotlight. Their 2009 debut album, Antique Soul, released on Jalapeno Records, was an instant success.

With seven studio albums to their name—including the UK Dance Album Chart #1 album Stratos Bleu (2020) and the acclaimed Red Ellen (2023)—Smoove & Turrell have established a reputation for their explosive live shows, captivating audiences at major festivals like Glastonbury and on international tours.
