DJ Ollie Teeba

DJ Ollie Teeba

Style: Hip Hop, Funk, Soul, Jazz

Ollie Teeba has been Djing Hip Hop, Funk, Soul and everything that falls in between since his teens in the mid-eighties. In 1993 Ollie met up with Jake Wherry and shortly after formed a production partnership resulting in the inception of  The Herbaliser (Ninja Tune).

Style in five words:
Boom-Bap Hip Hop & Funk

Genres that struck me first:
Hip Hop back in the 80’s. I never saw anything like it and knew from that moment that it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Most influential artists:
Gang Starr, De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock, Public Enemy, The Roots, James Brown etc

My three most successful tracks/remixes:
The Herbaliser – Sensual Woman
The Herbaliser- The Blend featuring What What (Jean Grae)
The Herbaliser – It Ain’t Nothin’ feat MFN Doom
The Herbaliser – Wall Crawling Giant Insect Breaks
Coldcut – Atomic Moog ( Herbaliser’s Post Atomiic Afterlife Lounge mix)
Dynamic Syncopation – Dedicated (DJ Ollie Teeba remix)
Soundsci – Understand the Message

Greatest moment of my career:
The Herbaliser supporting De La Soul in Paris

What makes a DJ a DJ?
Selection, selection, selection. There are tons of DJs with great technical skill that play garbage. Some of my favourite DJs can’t even mix well.

My favourite embarrassing tune:
Don’t have one

Weirdest thing that happened on tour:
The Herbaliser played a live show in Boulder (I think). A number of dudes in the audience decided that they would dance at the front minus their trousers and underwear. It was just weird and quite distracting.

MP3 – VINYL: Why?
I play digital but use higher quality files. Some of these mp3s sound awful. I also play just vinyl. Vinyl will always sound better. But it’s heavy to cart around that’s why I love playing 45 nights.

Shouts to the clubs & promoters:
Any clubs and promoters who like that funky sounding Hip Hop that you grew up listening to I am your man! When I say Hip Hop I don’t just mean rap sets I mean Afrika Bambaataa’s version of Hip Hop which encompasses Soul, Funk, Latin, Jazz, Washington Go-Go, 80’s Electro as well as rap classics and new funky stuff
